What is Infusoria?

If you take a drop of tap water and examine it under a microscope, what will you see? Chances are you will see some micro-organisms swimming in the drop of water. If you do the same thing with a drop of water taken from an established fish tank, what will you see? Chances are you will see many more micro-organisms. Now if you examine a drop of water taken from a stagnant pond, what will you see? You will see even much more micro-organisms. Collectively, these micro-organisms are known as infusoria.

Infusoria is useful to fish breeders as they are the starter food for very small fry. But don't go rushing to your nearest pond to collect the water there for your fry. More likely, you will end up introducing parasites or even worse, a predator like a dragonfly nymph into your tanks instead. Most killifish fry are large enough to eat baby brine shrimp at birth so there's no need to worry about not having infusoria in your raising trays. In any case, if you want to raise the fry in large numbers, infusoria alone is not enough. You will have to provide other sources of food or else the mortality rate will be very high. Baby brine shrimp, vinegar eels and microworms are all suitable food for killifish fry.
